Mark Smith received his Ph.D. in behavioral neuroscience from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.  He has worked in the Department of Psychology at Davidson College since 1998, where he currently holds the rank of professor.  Dr. Smith is a behavioral pharmacologist who studies the pharmacological, behavioral, and environmental factors that determine the effects of centrally activity drugs.  He has studied drugs as reinforcers since 2002, when he spent a one-year sabbatical at Wake Forest University School of Medicine.  Dr. Smith’s current research examines the factors that contribute to the positive reinforcing effects of stimulants and opioids, and potential behavioral interventions to reduce cocaine and heroin self-administration.
